Misconceptions About Studying Science

Now let's just put it out there- science is not the most popular degree to study at university.

Why you may ask? Several reasons have been suggested:

  1. Science doesn't receive nearly as much money as other degrees and so the marketing strategies reflect this.
  2. One of the great misconceptions of science students is that they will end up as researchers or science teachers.
  3. Many students associate university science with high school science. In reality they are vastly different.

Sure you can choose to study science and become a reseacher but it's certainly not the only option.

For years science students have been graduating from university and getting jobs in: medicine, communications, media, education, community health, town planning, fisheries, government departments, agriculture, optometry and engineering.

Not all scientists use microscopes.

The thing that's so great about science degrees is choice!

For all you high school and undergrad students who don't have your life or career mapped out then, choice is your greatest ally!

One of the other great advantages of a science degree is how social it is. With well over 50 science subjects to chose from and major in there is certianly no limit to the friends you can make. Science is a social degree!

We don't hang around in white lab coats conducting experiments all day long. There are always plenty of social events like bbq's, balls and activities to attend.

Still not convinced science is the degree for you?

Why not combine it with another degree? You can combine your Bachelor of Science with Arts, Engineering or Law to ensure you get a well rounded education and expand your graduate opportunities.
