OnSET is currently taking the necessary steps to achieve affiliation with UNSW's Clubs and Societies. By becoming a registered club on campus, OnSET will have greater access to resources to help promote OnSET to the wider community, and provide its members with more social events.

An Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday evening of 25th March. Listed below are the executive members and the accepted changes to the constitution.

Changes to the constitution

Name


The official name of the club shall be The Online Science, Engineering and Technology Review. This name shall be abbreviated to OnSET.


Aims


The aims and objectives of the club are:

to communicate science, engineering and technology in an interesting and entertaining way to high school and undergraduate students,
to discuss current research (especially research conducted at UNSW) and history of science, as well as topical issues,
to help UNSW students develop their written communication and management skills and to provide young science communicators with an environment in which to socialise and collaborate.


Establishment of OnSET Committee and function


The “OnSET Committee” shall comprise members of the Executive and other positions defined herewith:

Editor-in-Chief,
Web/Graphics Designer,
Public Relations Officer and
Social Events Coordinator.

Expressions of interest and/or election of members to these positions will be called for at each AGM. Casual vacancies shall by filled by election at the next Committee meeting. Elected Executive and/or Committee members can also invite financial members (such other persons) to be present for Committee meetings and perform roles as the Committee seeks fit.


Definition of OnSET Committee positions


Editor-in-Chief
Duties:
a) Assume responsibility for the accuracy of content, including dealing appropriately with plagiarism, libel, copyright and scientific integrity
b) Read all articles to check for consistent level of quality
c) Decide on themes for future issues
d) Co-ordinate allocation of articles to reporters
e) Coordinate reviewing process and ensure that all articles have been edited by at least two editors, one who is a major in that field (for technical accuracy) and one who is outside that field (for understanding)
f) Ensure that all interviews are approved by the interviewee before publication


Web/Graphics Designer
Duties:
a) Assume responsibility for the website, including copyright issues for images, conforming to UNSW’s guidelines for web pages, bandwidth theft issues
b) Lead the team of web producers
c) Ensure that the website is fully functional and up-to-date at all times
d) Design graphics for the website, fliers, and promotional posters, or designating these tasks

Public Relations Officer
Duties:
a) Assume responsibility for the appropriate representation of OnSET, the Science Communication Program (SCOM), the Faculty of Science, and the University
b) Develop strategies to promote OnSET to university students, high school students, academics and teachers
c) Liaise with other student groups and journals, academics, university staff, and external organisations


Social Events Coordinator
Duties:
a) Assume responsibility for the social aspect of OnSET
b) Organise social events for OnSET members, including road trips, pub crawls, and BBQs


Rules for election of Executive and Committee positions

From 1 April 2004, all nominees for Executive positions:
a) Must have been an elected member on the OnSET Committee for at least three months prior to standing for the relevant position, or
b) Must have attended at least two Committee meetings as an observer and had their nomination supported by a majority of the Committee currently serving at the time of nomination.

From 1 April 2004, all nominees for Committee positions:
a) Must have been active financial members of OnSET for at least one month prior to voting for the relevant position.
